Frequently asked questions

Install and Removal Problems

  • I'm upgrading but had problems with label migration, what can I do?

Sometimes, especially if you have many labels, the migration process hangs. All that really happens is some labels won't be renamed - i.e. nothing bad. Simply refresh Gmail, and manually alter anything that failed to migrate (giving it the new prefix style, P/, S/, C/, etc., or specify your own in the Options).
  • How do I remove GTDInbox?

Easily, in Firefox, go to Tools, then Addons - a window will pop up - now select GTDInbox and click Uninstall.
To clean Gmail up, all you need to do is remove GTD specific labels.

General Problems

  • I've just installed GTDInbox and it does not work, what's happening?

The most likely cause here is a wrong version of Gmail. First and formost, you need to make sure you're on Gmail2. If you are using Gmail2, you will see 'Older Version' in the top right, near the 'Settings' link. If you use regular Gmail (not Apps) and are still on version 1, you can switch to version 2 by going into Settings and changing your language to "English (US)". If you use Google Apps, you need to log into the admin panel ('Manage this Domain'), select the 'Domain Settings' tab, and at the bottom, choose 'Next Generation (US English Only)' and check 'Turn on new application features to my domain...'.
If you don't wish to use Gmail 2, you can use the old - and unsupported - version of GTDInbox 1.34, that only works with Gmail 1 (it'll stop working if you go to Gmail 2).
  • It works, but sometimes the Labels box has many instances of 'span' in it, how can I stop this?

This is most probably a conflict with the Folders4Gmail Greasemonkey script (also found in BetterGmail). As GTDInbox has this functionality built in; it's probably best to disable Folders4Gmail.
  • Something has stopped working, what do I do?!

As Gmail is often changing, and GTDInbox relies on Gmail, then sometimes things can break. If this happens, rest assured someone will address it, we just need to know!
You can either report a bug on the Forum, or send me an email andy@productivefirefox.com
  • Is it okay to use GTDInbox with a single Gmail account across multiple machines?

Technically, yes; there is certainly nothing risky about doing that.
However, some really useful parts of GTDInbox only work by storing data within Firefox, e.g. the relationships between labels and contacts, the frequency labels are used, and recent labels. These stats will be skewed between the various machines you use; possibly creating some strange reporting of relationships/recent items.
Fortunately, this is being worked on, and should be addressed soon with a special (Web-based) GTDInbox account.
  • I noticed that sometimes the relationships between projects, people & other labels aren't what I expect, why?

You are most likely experiencing the problem of using GTDInbox across multiple machines... we're on it!
  • Sometimes the Recent Projects list isn't what I expect, why?

Still the same issue as above, truly, it's in our sights :)
  • Why do threads that have been auto labelled sometimes reapply the same label?

This is a trifle embarrassing, yep, it's the multi-computer problem again (most likely). If it's not fixed already, watch the blog for announcements!

The Future

  • This is great, how can I help GTDInbox stay alive?

The best thing you can do is to Donate to Go Pro! And, if you think any colleagues or friends will like it then do pass it on. A friendly email is always welcome too ;)
  • Do you have a list of future planned features?

Yes, it's not exhaustive, but a rough outline is available on the About page.
  • I've got a great idea I'd like to see, where can I submit it?

Your best bet is to go over to the Forum and add it to the "Feature Requests" board.
  • How do you compare with other to-do list software (e.g. RTM, the upcoming Google Tasks), are they competitors?

GTDInbox is not specifically a to-do list application, that is simply one of its common uses. GTDInbox sees Gmail as a database, and finds meaningful new ways to interpret it, so the data contained (emails, actions, files, people) become more discoverable and manageable. The role of GTDInbox is to organise and better control the chaos in your inbox.
Other todo-lists are not seen as competitors, but as alternate ways of viewing your data and tasks, that can sometimes be more efficient for a particular job. For this reason, we want to work to try and cooperate with them and merge the sources of data.
  • What do you mean by 'social productivity'?

Good communication is key to good productivity, very little work and very few actions are a purely solo effort. GTDInbox - built over an excellent email system - is committed to making work-based communication more effective.

Safety

  • Straight from the hip, is this thing safe to install on my Gmail account?

Yes! It can't delete anything (unless you tell it to), you can easily remove it, and it makes no lasting changes to Gmail. It's also used by several Google engineers, and has passed through Google Legal without too much trouble - so it's not upsetting the parent!

Going Mobile

  • Can I use GTDInbox via IMAP?

Yes, we use IMAP-friendly prefixes on the labels, so they'll show up as folders in your IMAP software (e.g. P/GTDInbox would be a GTDInbox subfolder within the P folder).
  • Can I use GTDInbox on a mobile device?

Sort of. You can't use GTDInbox per se, but you can use Gmail on many mobile devices, and still control labels within your account (which is all GTDInbox does, ableit very usefully!).

Bonus Round

  • Why Firefox? Why Gmail?

The decision to use Firefox wasn't based on some hard market analysis - its share simply isn't that good - but on more personal reasons. Simply, I use Firefox daily as my preferred browser - not to mention it's by far the easiest browser to develop for, ensuring I can focus more on creating a quality product rather than just wrestling to make it work.

As for Gmail, again, it's not market share (that would be Yahoo Mail, or maybe Hotmail). Gmail was simply designed - knowingly I expect - with a very clean, open system that is suitable way beyond email. The basic structure of items (conversations), tags (labels) and multiple views (inbox, archive) is very database-like; and thus it's very easy to transform it from email into something more functional. Kudos to the Gmail team!
